Residence Requirements

Applicants must be either a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and meet the residence in Alberta requirement.

All applicants to the 2027 Cycle of the AIMG Program must be either a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada, as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Status achieved no later than August 28, 2026.
Applicants who think they may not be able to meet this deadline are encouraged to request an Administrative Exception (AE) through their online application.

Status in Canada

Residence in Alberta

Applicants to the 2027 Cycle of the AIMG Program must substantiate that they are an Albertan by ONE of the following methods.

Option A

Full-time attendance at an accredited Alberta senior high school for two (2) or more years, at least two (2) semesters per academic year.

Option B

Physical presence (in-person attendance) at an accredited postsecondary institution in Alberta, in a full-time program for two (2) or more years, totaling a minimum of eight (8) months per academic year.

Option C

Physical presence and continuously living on a day-to-day basis in the province of Alberta for 24 weeks beginning December 1, 2025 through to May 18, 2026. Absences from the province during this duration are allowable up to two weeks with proper documentation. Applicants using this criterion must be an Albertan: having valid Alberta government issued identification, maintaining identification from no other Canadian province or territory, and whose current health care benefits are funded by Alberta Health.
