Medical Education

Applicants must have a medical degree from a medical school which is recognized in Canada.

NOTE: All applicants must create and share their physiciansapply.ca profile with the AIMG Program by the main supporting documents deadline. This applies even if exam results or medical degrees are not yet available. Failure to share a profile by the deadline will result in an ineligible status.

NOTE: As of July 1, 2025, graduates of U.S. medical schools who complete their degree on or after this date must apply through the AIMG Program. Prior to this date, these graduates applied through the Canadian Medical Graduate (CMG) stream. Please refer to CaRMS and AFMC for the most up-to-date eligibility details..

All applicants must meet one of the following criteria

To check whether a medical school is recognized in Canada, locate the school in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and click on the Sponsor Notes tab. A note for “Canada” indicates that the medical school is recognized in Canada. It is the responsibility of the applicant to verify that the diploma-granting medical school meets the requirements stated above.

Applicants graduating before the main supporting documents deadline

Applicants whose medical degree has been conferred before the main supporting documents deadline (June 5, 2026) must complete the following by that deadline:

  1. Ensure their official medical degree is available in physiciansapply.ca
  2. Share access to their physiciansapply.ca profile with the AIMG Program
  3. Work directly with physiciansapply.ca to complete source verification until the degree status shows “Reviewed and Accepted”

All degree verification steps must be completed by the main supporting documents deadline.

Applicants graduating after the main supporting documents deadline

Applicants whose medical degree will not be conferred by the main supporting documents deadline (June 5, 2026) must upload one of the following by that deadline:

  • A letter from the Dean of the applicant’s medical school, on official letterhead, confirming the medical degree is expected to be conferred by July 1, 2027
  • OR
  • A copy of the applicant’s MCC NAC Student Attestation, signed by the Dean of their medical school, confirming the expected date of graduation.

These documents are required in place of the medical degree until it has been conferred.

NOTE: If an applicant is unable to obtain one of these documents by the deadline, they must refer to the Administrative Exception process.

After a successful CaRMS Match (residency start requirement)

Applicants who match to a residency position before graduating must ensure their medical degree is conferred in time to begin residency.

Matched applicants must:

  • Ensure their official medical degree is available in physiciansapply.ca
  • Share access with the AIMG Program
  • Work with physiciansapply.ca until the degree shows a status of “Reviewed and Accepted”

If graduation is delayed, matched applicants must immediately notify:

  • The AIMG Program, and
  • Their respective residency program and PGME office

Delays in graduation may affect residency start dates. This is managed between the residency program and PGME office.

Applicants must share their medical degree through physiciansapply.ca and complete source verification to a status of “Reviewed and Accepted” once their degree has been conferred. This verification is required to confirm eligibility.

Important: Applicants must keep their physiciansapply.ca profile shared with the AIMG Program, along with all required cycle documents, until the 2027 residency start date. Failure to do so may result in ineligibility.
