English Language Proficiency
A valid English Language Proficiency test with minimum scores required is necessary for each program cycle application.
All applicants to the 2027 Cycle must provide valid and current evidence of English language proficiency by way of ONE of the following options:
Option A
Proof of a valid English Language Proficiency test dated no earlier than July 1, 2025 (results must remain valid and current at the start of residency training) AND minimum scores achieved on a single test.
Notes:
- For all approved English Language Proficiency (ELP) tests, applicants must designate the AIMG Program as the organization authorized to access their results. If this step is not completed, ELP results cannot be verified.
- The Administrative Exception (AE) process is not to be used to request approval for the submission of an ELP test dated earlier than July 01, 2025.
- The AIMG Program accepts IELTS One Skill Retakes. Please note that applicants doing an IELTS One Skill Retake must still adhere to the deadline; no extensions will be granted. Test takers can use the updated Test Report Form that includes the updated IELTS One Skill Retake score. The original Test Report Form will continue to exist alongside the new IELTS One Skill Retake score, and both are valid.
- All results must be uploaded by August 28, 2026 @3:30PM MT. This includes all re- writes, re-takes, re-marking, re-evaluation, appeals, and Enquiry on Results (EORs).
Option B
Exemption from English language proficiency testing as per the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).
Notes:
- ELP exemptions are subject to CPSA approval.
- Individual conversations with CPSA registrars do not constitute as appropriate possibility of ELP exemption.
NOTE: The ELP Exemption Survey is only accessible during the online application period through a link in the application portal. Requests for ELP exemptions will not be considered after the period closes.
Applicants must complete BOTH of the following steps:
- Authorize the AIMG Program to access and verify their test results directly through the official ELP testing organization, and
- Upload a copy of their ELP test results to the supporting documents upload page in the application portal.
Applicants must meet the required minimum scores from one of the following three English Language Proficiency tests:
- Upload a copy of the applicant’s current IELTS Academic Version or IELTS Online Test Report Form (TRF) by August 28, 2026 @ 3:30 PM MT, achieving a minimum score of 7.0 in each component on a single test
- Upload a copy of the applicant’s current OET Medicine or OET @ Home examination Statement of Results by August 28, 2026 @3:30 PM MT, achieving a minimum grade of B in each component on a single test.
- Upload a copy of the applicant’s current CELPIP General examination Official Score Report by August 28, 2026 @3:30 PM MT, achieving a minimum score of 9 in each component on a single test.
All results will be source verified. Notarization is not required.
Applicants requesting an ELP exemption must complete one of the following listed below:

Upload a copy of a previously issued CPSA practice permit to the supporting documents upload page by the main supporting documents deadline. This document will be reviewed as part of the file review to confirm eligibility for exemption.
ELP Exemption Survey

Information provided in the survey will be reviewed, and the AIMG Program may consult will CPSA to determine eligibility for exemption.
Medical Degrees
Medical degrees from CPSA-recognized English-speaking countries are verified through physiciansapply.ca to confirm eligibility for an ELP exemption.
Important Note
