WELCOME TO THE ALBERTA INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL GRADUATE PROGRAM
Our Program
The Alberta International Medical Graduate Program (AIMG Program) was created in 2001 as a provincial program for the assessment and placement of Albertan medical graduates trained outside of Canada and the United States into post graduate residency positions at the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary.
The AIMG Program provides IMGs access to a defined number of post graduate residency positions (year one entry). These residency positions are funded by the Alberta Government and align with identified provincial physician resource needs.
The AIMG Program offers a competitive and merit based assessment protocol to determine if IMGs have the clinical skills, knowledge and behaviors needed to enter an Alberta post graduate residency program.
Our Mission
To increase the number of IMGs eligible to work as medical doctors in Alberta by providing qualified IMGs who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents residing in Alberta with access to post graduate medical education in high-need specialties, as mandated by the Government of Alberta through the Minister of Health and Wellness.
Program Governance
The AIMG Provincial Steering Committee provides direction to the AIMG Program and is accountable to the Government of Alberta through the Minister of Health and Wellness for the effective governance and management of the AIMG Program.
Members of the AIMG Program Steering Committee are nominated by their representative organizations, including:
- Alberta Health and Wellness
- Alberta Health Services
- Postgraduate Medical Education Office, The University of Alberta
- Postgraduate Medical Education Office, The University of Calgary
- The Alberta Rural Physician Action Plan
- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
- Alberta International Medical Graduate Association
