Alberta
International Medical Graduate Eligibility Requirements
The following is a list of basic eligibility requirements
for all applicants who apply for post-graduate residency training
positions in Alberta through the Alberta International Medical
Graduate Program. Application information must be supported
with documentary evidence. If applicable, documents must be
translated into English and notarized as outlined in Supporting
Documents.
1. Canadian Status
All applicants must fit ONE of the following criteria:
- Canadian born citizen
- Naturalized Canadian
- Permanent resident
- Landed immigrant (prior to 2002)
2. Medical School Diploma
All IMG applicants must meet one of the following
criteria:
- be a graduate of an undergraduate medical degree (e.g.,
MD, MBBS, and MCChB) in allopathic medicine in a medical
school outside of Canada and the United States. The medical
school must have been in existence for a minimum of 10 years,
and be listed in the FAIMER/ International Medical Education
Directory
- be a graduate of an accredited Osteopathy school in the
United States
All Final Year Medical Student applicants
must:
- be in the final year of a medical school outside of Canada
and the United States that has been in existence for a minimum
of 10 years and is listed in the FAIMER/ International Medical
Education Directory, and
- pass the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination
Part 1 (MCCQE1) prior to the start of the AIMG Program Externship.
3. Alberta Residency
All applicants must fit ONE of the following criteria:
- have been a continuous resident of the province of Alberta
for 6 or more weeks up to and including the application
deadline
- have attended an Alberta high school for 2 or more years
- have attended a post secondary institution in Alberta
full time for 2 or more years
4. Fluency in English
All applicants must declare their first language on the Privacy Notice and Declaration form and demonstrate proof of fluency in English.
If your first language is not English, you
must submit acceptable scores on all required components of
ONE of the following:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language – Internet
Based Test (TOEFL-IBT)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Language Proficiency Requirements
5. Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination
All applicants applying for assessment must have:
- received a passing grade on the Medical Council of Canada
Evaluating Examination (MCCEE).
6. Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination
Part 1
All IMG applying for assessment must have:
- received a passing grade on the Medical Council of Canada
Qualifying Examination Part 1 (MCCQE1).
All Final Year Medical Students applying for assessment
must:
- provide evidence of registration for the Spring or Fall
examination for the current year by submitting a copy of
the ‘Registration Complete and Accepted’ email
notification letter from the Medical Council of Canada with
their application package.
Admission to the Alberta International Medical Graduate
Program assessment process is based on the number of available
seats in the OSCE. Successful completion of the OSCE and MMI
assessment does NOT guarantee a placement into the Externship
phase.
